The Video Platform Grants Viewers Power to Reduce AI-Generated Media in Timelines

Users will soon have a new feature that permits them to reduce the volume of artificial intelligence-produced media appearing in their timelines. This initiative comes as the service revealed that it currently hosts over 1 billion AI videos.

Testing and Rollout

The update is in a pilot phase over the next few weeks before a widespread rollout. This shift coincides with a rise in content created by AI, spurred by recent video-generation tools.

AI Content on Other Platforms

Studies have shown that approximately 10% of the fastest-growing channels on another major platform exclusively feature content made by AI. A considerable share of this content is considered low-quality AI content, a term for poor-quality, bulk-generated content that is typically illogical or surreal.

Based on user feedback that many people like content made with AI tools, including computer-generated images to informative clips, and we aim to provide users the ability to increase or decrease of that, according to their own preferences,” stated a platform representative.

Volume and Proportions

TikTok announced that there are now 1.3 billion videos on its network tagged as artificially created. In total, in excess of 100 mn media items are uploaded to the service daily, making AI content a minor part of its overall inventory.

User Control Features

Viewers will be able to reduce or increase the volume of artificial media they view by opening the topic control option in the platform and selecting the AI content topic. Further subjects that currently be adjusted under the tool include politics, fashion, beauty, and dance.

Platform Guidelines

TikTok’s rules oblige users to identify “realistic” AI-made content, and it prohibits malicious fake videos of public figures or emergencies. Any authentic-looking artificial content that is unmarked can be taken down under its community policies.

In addition, the app will from now on apply an “AI-made” tag to content made using its own AI tools, or identified by an cross-platform project for recognizing AI-generated material. This measure is designed to stop users from attempting to evade the tagging system.

AI Literacy Programs

The company is also establishing a $2m educational fund for experts and organizations to create educational content about using AI responsibly. This program will support educational bodies focused on educating coding and technology.

Platform Protection

The platform has defended its content review process, amid discussion over proposals to cut jobs for a large number of content moderators in Britain. TikTok is expected to reduce hundreds of positions in its user protection team in London, with labor groups and online safety experts raising concerns that people are being substituted by automated systems.

A company official clarified that staff-based oversight would continue to be important, but AI can shield workers by removing the most harmful content ahead of it gets reviewed by people. TikTok announced a 76% decrease in explicit and harmful content reviewed by content reviewers over the past year due to intervention by its machine learning processes.

“We think that it’s essential to integrate staff and AI to maintain a secure environment,” the official commented. “We’ll have staff as integral to the approach, but we additionally believe it’s highly necessary to reduce exposure to harmful content as rapidly, which is why a extensive automated help is making a difference work at speed.”
