EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
